About UsThe SYB Optimist Club of Lusby in conjunction with other Optimist Clubs in the Maryland Area and the Maryland South Delaware District of Optimist International work hand-in-hand to create viable citizens and leaders for tomorrow out of the thousands of youth touched each year by these programs. Optimist International, founded nearly 80 years ago, along with the Optimist International Foundation provide the backbone in planning, structure, training, and financial backing for all clubs who work with these programs in communities around the world.
- The SYB Optimist Club of Lusby was chartered in February 1995 and has become one of Calvert Counties largest tools for positive and safe sports and activities for children.
- Today, we offer programs and services for everyone involved in youth sports experiences, volunteer administrators, volunteer coaches, and young athletes.
- Our members and community volunteers who assist in these programs take immense pride in providing positive instruction and building basic motor skills. Administrators (local volunteers) and volunteer coaches are strongly encouraged to attend our youth sports training that will aid them in handling their roles and responsibilities.
The SYB Optimist Club of Lusby (SYB) seeks to make the sports experience safe, fun and healthy for ALL children. In addition, SYB promotes the value and importance of sports and physical activities in the emotional, physical, social and mental development of youth. We believe that participation in sports and activities develops important character traits and lifelong values. In addition, we believe that the lives of our youth can be positively influenced by participation in sports and physical activities, if the adults apply their training and information. Dottie Hagelin, the SYB Optimist Club of Lusby’s current President, has been a visible influence in the administration of our sports programs for many years. He has seen our program expand and change over the years and is just one of our many committed volunteers that has assumed the responsibilities and duties that enables our youth to continue to participate in positive activities within the community. Our programs are provided at the local level with the support of locally owned businesses, as well as the cooperation and support from community-based organizations, that includes Calvert County Parks and Recreation and other independent youth service groups throughout the county.
